Structure of blue phase III of cholesteric liquid crystals.
We report large scale simulations of the blue phases of cholesteric liquid crystals. Our results suggest a structure for blue phase III, the blue fog, which has been the subject of a long debate in liquid crystal physics. We propose that blue phase III is an amorphous network of disclination lines, which is thermodynamically and kinetically stabilized over crystalline blue phases at intermediat...
متن کاملEmerging Liquid Crystal Displays Based on the Kerr Effect
The device physics and electro-optical properties of emerging liquid crystal displays (LCDs) based on the Kerr effect are investigated. With a voltage applied, both blue phase and polymer-stabilized blue phase exhibit a fascinating isotropic-toanisotropic transition. We have developed a numerical model to understand the underlying device physics in order to optimize device performance. The oper...
متن کاملA Polarization Independent Microlens using Two Blue-Phase Liquid Crystal Layers with Different Kerr Constant
We propose a new microlens device structure using two polymerstabilized blue phase liquid crystal layers whose Kerr constant is largely different. Such a polarization independent microlens has a simple structure and desired parabolic phase profile. Its applications for 2D/3D switchable displays and other photonic devices are emphasized.
متن کاملDiluter Effects on Large Dielectric Anisotropy Blue Phase Liquid Crystals
We have investigated diluter effects on the Debye relaxation frequency, and electro-optics of polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystals (BPLC). The relaxation frequency can be increased by adding a small amount of diluters, which benefits high frequency operation of BPLC. Some diluters significantly decrease the BPLC response time while maintaining similar Kerr constant. Author
متن کاملDensity functional study of amorphous, liquid and crystalline Ge(2)Sb(2)Te(5): homopolar bonds and/or AB alternation?
The amorphous, liquid and crystalline phases of the phase change material Ge(2)Sb(2)Te(5) (GST) have been studied by means of density functional/molecular dynamics simulations. The large sample (460 atoms and 52 vacancies in the unit cell) and long simulations (hundreds of picoseconds) provide much new information. Here we extend our original analysis (2007 Phys. Rev. B 76 235201) in important ...
